Seven performance car mistakes that can potentially cost you big

If you like a car that makes every drive feel like an adventure, you can't go past a performance vehicle. However, if you own a performance vehicle it's important to watch your car costs as they can easily become overly expensive if you don't take care.

Here are seven tips to make sure your performance vehicle doesn't end up costing you big bucks.

1. Keep it street legal

While it can be tempting to lower your ride and get the darkest possible tint, if you plan to keep driving your car on public roads you need to make sure that it meets all of the regulations for being street legal in your area. If you don't, you can end up facing heavy fines if you get pulled over by the police.

2. Watch the tyre wear

Most performance car drivers like to experiment with the handling on their car, but this can be tough on tyre wear. It is a good idea to choose tyres that have a balance of grip and wear, or you can end up replacing them very often. This can be particularly bad if you like to drift or do other showy driving moves.

3. Riding the clutch

If you ride the clutch to try and get faster gear changes you can end up scoring the clutch. This can lead to expensive repairs, especially in newer performance vehicles which often have a clutch that is harder for the mechanic to access.

4. Fast and hard braking

If you like to put your foot down and ride your car fast, you'll often need to brake hard. This can play havoc with your brake pads and if left unchecked can end up scoring the brake disc. This can be a very costly repair.

5. Blown motors

One of the most common repairs in a performance car is a blown motor. This is most common on motors that have a lot of wear and that are used to the limits of their performance. It is a good idea to keep on an eye both the time and kilometres between services, so that you can get oil changes when you need them.

6. Over heating

In the hot Australian climate it is easy for cars to overheat, particular when they are being used hard in performance driving. It is important to make sure that the radiator is full and that there are no leaks or blockages in the system. If you are a planning a long drive, particularly if you are going somewhere dusty, it is a good idea to check all of your hoses for leaks before you start out.

7. Fuel usage

Performance cars are not designed to be fuel efficient, but there are some small things that you can do to optimise the fuel usage no matter how you use the car, including making sure that your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure and making sure that you are not carting extra weight by carrying unnecessary items in the boot.

Regular servicing and smart driving can make sure your performance car is not overly expensive to run.
